About us
The AzII e-Book House at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) serves as an information center supporting the educational, training, and research programs of its readers, including faculty, students, and staff. It also facilitates effective use of leisure time by offering a collection of printed and electronic resources.
Established in 1920 based on the Baku Polytechnic School, the library began its activities under the new structure of ASOIU in December 2018. While benefiting from global experiences in its development, the e-Book House has created a unique library system branded specifically for AzII.
On December 30, 2022, the Open Library was inaugurated under the AzII e-Book House. Spanning 100 square meters, it accommodates 70 seating spaces and features 1,340 displayed books across 16 categories, including fiction, science, history, politics, philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, and economics. Books in the Open Library are selected based on reader requests and suggestions.
The Book House maintains electronic and traditional catalogs, a diverse collection of books, journals, periodicals, and other information carriers in Azerbaijani, Russian, and foreign languages.

Book Collections
AzII e-Book House is a state repository and information center with a history of 104 years, implementing state policies in the field of librarianship in Azerbaijan. It preserves national publications, Azerbaijani and foreign-language books published abroad, classical literature by Azerbaijani and foreign authors, globally significant publications, works authored by ASOIU’s faculty, and other information resources.
The collection traces its origins to 1920, coinciding with the university's establishment. It has always included books in Azerbaijani, Russian, and other foreign languages. The fund comprises technical, exact sciences, socio-political, literary, legal, and other disciplines, as well as periodicals, serials, dissertations, abstracts, patents, standards, atlases, maps, reports, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and digital media.
Specialized collections feature topics such as oil and gas exploration, mineralogy, geophysics, petrography, geology, ecology, energy, electronics, chemistry, nanotechnology, automation, IT, history, law, marketing, international relations, management, and more. The collection also includes rare and unique books and manuscripts from 1820-1910 on engineering, architecture, oil, geology, physics, and metallurgy.
The primary objective here is to focus on organizing, preserving, maintaining records, and ensuring the fund is accessible to readers.
All books preserved in the fund are arranged according to the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) and in alphabetical-chronological order. To protect books and other printed materials from light, dust, humidity, and other external factors, they are stored on special ventilated and illuminated mobile shelves designed for libraries. Each book and printed item is barcoded, entered into the electronic catalog and database of the Book House, and prepared for use by readers. Placing the books on mobile shelves and integrating them into the system not only simplifies librarians' tasks and facilitates reader services but also safeguards printed materials from external damage.
The fund’s systematization
Printed materials and documents in the fund are primarily classified by scientific fields, language, and year of publication, stored in various collections to ensure swift and quality service for users. Resources are available in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, French, Turkish, Chinese, German, Italian, and other languages. The main goal remains the organization, preservation, recording, and accessibility of the fund for readers.
Reading Halls
The Book House spans a two-story area of 800 square meters. On the second floor, specialized reading halls are operational. These halls have been renovated to meet modern standards, equipped with comfortable furniture, 30 computers, high-speed internet, and Wi-Fi networks. Separate halls are designated for the faculty members, doctoral students, master’s students, and undergraduate students. The technologically advanced reading halls accommodate up to 200 users at a time.
Visitors can use the computers in the reading halls to access electronic resource databases of international universities, libraries, and publishers that the Book House is affiliated with. Additionally, they are provided with classified book collections, rare and unique exhibits, miniature books, periodicals, and journal databases, offering a comprehensive and high-quality service.
Upon entering the first-floor lobby, visitors can check available seats on a monitor and register electronically using specific devices, granting them access to the designated halls. A conducive reading environment is created for users, offering quick access to diverse literature and international information resources available in the halls.
The open-shelf system is also employed in the reading halls. Users can access information on newly acquired books through exhibitions such as "Information Month" and the "New Publications" series, which are part of the reference-bibliographic apparatus, as well as thematic exhibitions dedicated to historical and significant days.
One of the halls in the reading area is the Presentation Hall, where events and book presentations are organized. Primarily, discussions are held on newly acquired books added to the Book House database. These presentations are attended by faculty members, authors, and guests, providing insights into the significance and content of the presented books and sharing additional information about them.
There are also relaxation areas in the reading hall designed for visitors to unwind.
Bibliographic Indexes
To support the educational, scientific research, and training activities of higher education institutions, the preparation of bibliographic indexes is one of the essential tasks of libraries. Considering this, AzII e-Book House has prepared bibliographic guides and indexes under series such as "Scientists of Azerbaijan," "Chemists of Azerbaijan," "Geologists of Azerbaijan," "Energy Scientists of Azerbaijan," and "Oil Scientists of Azerbaijan." These highlight the lives, achievements, and contributions of prominent scientists in chronological order.
Prepared bibliographic indexes include:

E-Catalog
Electronic Books
The e-catalog serves as a mirror of the library's collection. Creating electronic catalogs is one of the most critical tasks libraries face today, as it is essential to improve the quality of information services provided by libraries. In today's era of information overload, electronic catalogs are necessary to help readers access the information they need. Taking this into consideration, the e-catalog of the Book House has been developed.
Each book and other printed materials in the collection are classified according to the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). After being placed in mobile shelves categorized by scientific disciplines, they are entered into the electronic database, barcoded, and added to the electronic catalog in chronological order. This allows readers to access a comprehensive and detailed information service. The e-catalog offers users a multi-faceted and extensive search system. Readers can search for books and other printed materials by scientific disciplines, authors, publication year, publication location, language, and other criteria.
The creation of the e-catalog is carried out through the "Electronic Resources" section. The catalog's database includes newly acquired books in the Book House's collection, books frequently requested by readers, returned books, and literature from other library collections deemed necessary based on reader demands and preferences. A significant portion of the books added to the e-catalog are authored by the teaching staff of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), and this process is ongoing.
